Event Description:
ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) has been found to be an effective method of addressing difficulties associated with chronic pain. In this presentation, we will briefly review ACT concepts and their application to chronic pain. The focus will be placed on discussing specific interventions to use within the therapeutic hour and situations where the interventions will be applicable. The primary goal of this Grand Rounds is to provide clinicians with specific tools when working with individuals with chronic pain.
Presenter Info:
Carter Comrie is a licensed clinical psychologist based in Southeast Michigan and is the current Chairperson for the MPA Pain Psychology Task Force. In addition to his role within the MPA, he is the Mental Health Lead for Crossover Health, a tech-enabled, direct-to-employer interdisciplinary clinic system located in the Detroit, Michigan area, and serves at the Vice-Chairperson for the Michigan Health Professional Recovery Committee, being the representative from the Board of Psychology.

Event Description:
This talk will cover research on the development of Callous-Unemotional (CU) Traits, which are codified as Limited Prosocial Emotions in the DSM-5. The talk will begin with a definition of CU traits and an overview of their clinical presentation. Then most of the talk will review research demonstrating the role parenting plays in the development of this outcome with discussion of implications for treatment.
Presenter Info:
Luke W. Hyde is an Professor in Psychology and Chair of the Clinical Science Area, with appointments at the Institute for Social Research and Poverty Solutions Center at the University of Michigan. He is a licensed clinical psychologist in the State of Michigan. With training in clinical and developmental psychology, as well as affective neuroscience, his research focuses on understanding the development of risk and resilience in children and families. This research has focused on topics including how nature and nurture interact across development, the development of antisocial behaviors and child psychopathy, and the ways in which poverty-related stressors impact brain and behavioral development. His work has been recognized by several early career awards including the Janet Taylor Spence Award for Transformative Early Career Contributions from the Association for Psychological Science and the Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contributions to Psychology from the American Psychological Association. He is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science.

Event Description:
Three Ann Arbor psychologists have contributed chapters to an anthology entitled "The Ones Who Remember: Second-Generation Voices of the Holocaust" (City Point Press, 2022). This collection of 16 chapter-length memoirs explores the authors' lived experiences growing up in the shadow of the Holocaust. The presentation will discuss the transmission of intergenerational trauma and resilience, and the therapeutic benefits that arise from narrative writing. Participants will be able to describe the mental health benefits of autobiographical writing. Participants will demonstrate knowledge of intergenerational transmission of trauma and resilience.
Presenter Info: This presentation will be jointly given by Joy Wolfe Ensor, PhD, Rita Benn, PhD, and Fran Lewy Berg.
- PhD. Dr. Ensor is recently retired from clinical practice, but has previously spent time in private practice and at MDHHS-Hawthorn Center.
- Dr. Benn is trained as a clinical/school psychologist at UofM. She was on faculty at the UofM Med School for over 20 years.
- Dr. Berg attained her doctorate in Psychology and Education from UofM. She is a clinical psychologist, a certified couples therapist, and has been in private practice for nearly 35 years.
